How to get the best photos when you have really energetic kids!

As a family photographer (and a mom of two little ones!), I know that capturing beautiful photos of young children can be both fun AND challenging. Kids are full of energy and excitement, which can sometimes make it tricky to get those perfect shots. But don't worry -- it IS possible! With a bit of planning and some creative strategies, we can make the experience enjoyable and stress-free for everyone and still capture those sweet & authentic candid moments that truly reflect your family's personality.

How I Manage Energy and Keep Kids Engaged

  1. Set Clear Expectations: Before our session begins, I’ll gently explain to the kids what we’re going to do and the general plan ("First we'll take some photos of you exploring the waterfall with your mom and dad. Then we'll have just you and your sister sit on the blanket for some photos of the two of you."). Using simple, friendly language helps them understand what to expect and what is needed from them.
  2. Involve Them in the Process: I love letting kids have a say in how they pose or what they do. This helps them feel more involved and less likely to wander off. It’s all about making them a part of the fun!
  3. Keep it Fun! The best sessions are the ones that fly by because we're laughing and having so much fun we don't realize it's time to go home.
  4. Keep Sessions Short and Sweet: I ensure that we switch poses or activities frequently to keep things fresh and engaging. Short and dynamic sessions help maintain their interest and energy levels.
  5. Incorporate Games: Turning posing into a game is one of my favorite techniques. Interactive prompts can direct their energy into something fun and engaging while keeping them close.
  6. Be Flexible: I adjust my approach and expectations based on the children’s mood and energy levels. I might have a handful of different shots in mind, but if we are only able to accomplish two or three, that's okay!
  7. Have a Back Up Plan: I love to keep some alternative ideas in mind. Can we sense a toddler meltdown coming on? Let's press the reset button by putting on some music and having a five minute dance party.

Preparation Tips for Parents

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable photo session, here are a few tips for preparation:

  • Discuss the Session: Talk to your children about what to expect during the photo session. Let them know it will be fun and interactive.
  • Bring Favorite Items: If your children have favorite toys or comfort items, bring them along. They can help make the session more enjoyable.
  • Dress Comfortably: Choose outfits that are comfortable and easy for your kids to move in. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive.
  • Try the Outfits on in Advance: It happens to the best of us - uh oh, the cute dress doesn't fit the baby. Now what? Avoid last minute scrambles by trying the outfits on a few days in advance (including shoes and accessories).
  • Have a Snack: Feed the kids before the session to avoid a Hangry episode.
  • Prepare for Fun: Encourage your kids to be themselves and enjoy the process. The more relaxed and happy they are, the better the photos will turn out.
  • Leave the Screens at Home: We don't want distractions, so tablets, phones, etc. should be left at home or in the car.
  • Choose a Reward: It could be helpful to have a small reward for your kids to look forward to after the photos.
  • Identify the Priorities: Talk with your partner to identify the most important shots you want from the session. Are you really hoping for at least one nice photo of the whole family together? Or would you be most excited to see some great sibling shots? Or maybe your goal is to capture the little details of your growing family -- the baby's chubby arms and legs, your toddler's mischievous smile, and your preschooler's growing independence.
  • Try to Relax!: Here's a secret...Sometimes naughty makes for a GREAT photo! Seriously, relax a little. This is the one time when you don't need to be a strict parent. We are going for a relaxing vibe...if you or the kids are stressed, it will come through in the photos.

Believe it or not, I LOVE wiggly toddlers and family photography is my passion. I aim to make the experience enjoyable and stress-free while capturing those sweet, authentic moments.
